Cockerel - 2024

This is a pretty small model (I've included a thimble in the photo so that the size is more obvious), but that doesn't necessarily make things easier or faster! The 3D paper craft model had been made available on the Maruman website (the parts are shown here) and was designed by Watabe Tetsuya of Kamimodel. I had to make the tail feathers and crest double-sided, and work out how to attach the two button eyes. The beak and feet are made of the same thick interfacing as the rest of the model, but instead of embroidering them I painted them with nail polish, because it was easier and also seemed like a good contrast to the texture of the feathers. This does balance on its own two feet, but only because I put a weight inside its secret compartment, which poppers shut. I suspect that using embroidery thread etc changes the balance a little compared to how the model would work if it was made of paper.
